An urban village prototype In the next decade, Hanoi and its regions are on the way to becoming the next mega-city of Southeast Asia. The cities' boundary is in the infinity mutable process. The ever-expanding city is devouring agriculture land, craft villages and local identities. Intention : The project intends to cope with the inevitable growth of the Hanoi, the preservation of agricultural land and to find a new vernacular architecture prototype which mediates the local context and the globalization phenomenon.

Strategies : The toolhouses cluster

Vietnamese culture based on the community value. It formed the vernacular architectural identity. This social structure is losing since the age of urbanization. The project aims to recreate the new community living model in the suburban area of Hanoi. At architectural scale, This prototype is composed of 5 toolhouses with an important proportion of common space. shared courtyards on top and in the middle of the cluster are multifunctional, they can host the extension of the workshop, domestic and agricultural activities. Living and working are inseparable.

This prototype promotes a retrospective way of living, the real-life interaction between people. The toolhouse cluster is built on stilt which helps to minimize the environmental impact and give place to experiment the permaculture. It can be easily mounted and unmounted, can be replaced by another without harming the cultivated land. The dynamic configuration of the toolhouse cluster is therefore suggestive and generative.

Linear Community and &Lang ; (village)

The toolhouse can be multiplied and developed along the pathway in the middle of the paddy field. In order to form the linear neighborhood. They stick together to form a whole village. And &Lang ;will be the contemporary vernacular solution for Vietnamese rural area. The prototype can also be applied to another similar context in Southeast Asia.
