We think ”Vernacular Architecture” is a intuitive way of tectonic people used to answer their demand. In Taiwan,”Vernacular” used to came from people’s response due to weather,and the relationship between family. While with the improvement of technology,most of the problem can be solved. We states that the modern ”Vernacular Architecture” result from the demand of space in the city with a high density.
Since 21th centry,modern architecture has spread over many developing cities in Asia. In Taipei, a city bloosomed after the WWII,the Domino system,once a representation of the freedom of architecture,becomes a symbol of economic development.Leading to a mass of concrete architecture sprout out.
With these large amount of copy building without the coherent of the local environment and culture.People started to build the add-on according to their demands,gradually developed a complex urban texture and a specific vernacular architecture vocabulary in Taipei.
We Try to design a new Vernacular Language, which can integrated with the usage of future city.We chose Ximending(西門町),a place with its complex hybrid of residential and commercial as our site.
We took a research on these vernacular self-building, categorizing the additions into five types:Roof add-on;Balcony add-on;Signboard coverage;Hanging coverage;Full page coverage.For each prototype, We place a new form of add-on according to its program and surrounding context.Overturn the interface which were “extremely private” or ””extremely commercial”.
The new “Vernacular Architecture additional” will be a flexible addition for both sides,release the tension between residential and commercial,as well as becoming the catalyst of the new urban life and lead the urban space into the next stage.
