In Nanjing, China, there are many villages destroied by urban sprawl. It is pretty hard for these vernacular types of home to fit in the requirements of modern life or programs, thus poses a threat to their survival.

One typical district of village-in-city is chosen as a case to experiment the renewal of vernacular types. These renewal types are generated from existing types, new reqirements of people as well as the retrospection of historical trace.

I sincerely hope that the manipulation discussed in this design can not only function as a kind of dynamic improvement of vernacular forms, but also be universally applied to similar conditions Chinese traditional houses confronted with.
